On the 10th of June, 2023, Sunitha Balakrishnan passed away after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma. Sunitha - Sunu, to those who loved her - was a ray of sunshine that lit up every room she walked into. From the moment she was first diagnosed in 2018, she was determined to do all she could to educate those around her about cancer, empower, and lift up the cancer community here in Malaysia. Sunu was also a mother and a teacher, and her passion and love for children was clear to anyone who knew her. Sunu would have turned 50 years old this year. In honor of her, we - her family - would like to raise funds over the next month leading up to her birthday, all of which will be donated to the National Cancer Society Malaysia, in aid of The Children's Home of Hope. The Children's Home of Hope is a branch of the National Cancer Society Malaysia that provides aid for children and families facing childhood cancer. If you are able, please join us in our journey of spreading Sunu's Light a little further. We hope that the funds raised will be able to ease the difficulties of cancer fighters and their families, and bring hope for brighter days to come.

Our Project "Breathe Strong: Herald of Hope” is a fundraising project that will be held at Universiti Malaya. As a non-governmental organization, National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) is financed entirely by contributions and donations from the public, and with some help from our group, we can raise some funds for NCSM to provide holistic cancer-related services to cancer patients, caregivers and the public through their centers. As the public awareness regarding cancer in Universiti Malaysia is not being circulated around much and has not been mentioned in any kind of programs and activities, we as students at University Malaya has a duty to bring up the issues involving cancers and spread the awareness that had been done by NCSM while also educating ourselves regarding cancers in the process. Our main justification for conducting this project is to give financial support to NCSM for them to conduct more activities with the funds we acquired. Furthermore, young generations like us are not conscious regarding the issues involving cancer and that’s why our group hopes that others in University Malaya can be more aware about the risk of cancer as the saying goes prevention is better than cure.In line with the lung cancer awareness month in November, our group will start the project by selling some baked goods by this month with some of us having the expertise in baking while others will do the marketing and selling baked goods to the students in Universiti Malaya. We all agreed that all the profits gained from the sales will be given to the NCSM to be given to anyone who’s in need of it. Not only that, but we will also do various other activities such as online fundraising and educating the public regarding cancer. As the project will be done continuously by this semester, we hope that we can bring up the numbers of monetary contribution as much as we can possibly get with our current manpower but considering us as students, even if we can only generate some meager amount to NCSM, we hope it will be considered as a great contribution to help the people in need especially towards the cancer patients. We hope that the money that we manage to generate can be used for the NCSM noble cause.

This year, as the founder of Project Latha, I'm taking a stand to celebrate my birthday differently. Instead of a fancy birthday celebration, I've decided to kick off a fundraising drive for the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) as a remarkable milestone for me and my project as the winner of Classic Mrs International Universal 2023. We urge you to support this campaign by donating directly to this account. The money directly goes to the NCSM and we'll provide updates on the outcome of this campaign by its end. Through our small effort, we hope to ensure that the cancer patients in need receive the help they deserve in a timely fashion. Every little bit helps, so we kindly invite your generous support.

Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer among Malaysian males (the second most common cancer after breast cancer), and also one of the leading cause of death in Malaysia. And nearly 75% of colorectal cancer are diagnosed at a late stage (with close to 40% diagnosed at stage 4 - Metastatic disease!) You often won’t have any symptoms until it’s too late, hence the purpose of colorectal screening test - to catch ‘em early. There are different screening tests available depending on your risks, including Faecal Occult Blood Test - which is a non-invasive testing - just providing a stool sample!Discuss your screening options with your Primary Care Physician / GP today

Ten years ago on August 8th, Prem Asha Nair passed away after a battle with colon cancer. In remembrance of her kind, caring and fearless nature, we will be raising funds over the next month, all of which will be donated to the National Cancer Society. I will also be shaving my hair on the last day of the fundraising (8/8) and will make a donation to Locks of Hope. According to WHO, 48,639 new cancer cases were recorded in Malaysia last year. Breast, colorectal, and lung cancers make up about half of the total cancer cases reported by the Malaysia National Cancer Registry.I hope the funds raised can help in some small way to ease the difficulties faced by patients and their families.

As one of my close family members is diagnosed with cancer, it is only then that it feels like it hits close to home. Never have I thought too much of those suffering from cancer because it all seems so distant. Now that it has finally befallen my family members, watching my family member slowly becoming less human as she fights against cancer, I can't help but sympathize with all my fellows out there who are probably facing the same fate.

Hi there,We are the Buzzcuts for Cancer team, and we are looking for your donation so that we can benefit the National Cancer Society of Malaysia and the Locks of Hope association in aiding the lives of cancer patients. Cancer is something that has affected the lives of many of our loved ones, and we hope to help others in combatting this unfortunate and deadly disease. For every RM50 that we raise together, one of us from the team will get a buzzcut, meaning that we will shave all of our hair off, and we aim to raise at least RM1,000 in total as a community. Please do donate as much as you can to help our cause and raise money to help those affected by cancer in Malaysia. Any amount, no matter how small or big, is a major help towards our cause, so please do spread the word and help us to achieve our goal. Thank you so much for your help!

At some point of time in our lives, we would have heard, read, seen or even experienced the sufferings of a cancer battling patient which left us helpless not knowing what to do. I’m Sethu Ponniah, a philanthropist in the making, an environmentalist and an engineer by profession. My family had our first brush with cancer when my sister was diagnosed with leukemia. It was a devastating news for us as she was barely 5 years of age, and I was a toddler and didn’t understand the situation back then. One thing I do remember is that she was absent from home very frequently. My sister survived the ordeal of the sickness. Later in my early 20’s it hit us again, this time it was my grandmother and my aunt passing in the same year due to cancer detected at a very late stage. It was then as my family took care of them, I understood deeper the ordeal and pain that the patient and caregiver had to go through. We were so thankful & grateful to the Hospice personnel who visited our house and educated us on various aspects of palliative care for the patient and prepared us for the inevitable. As I pondered through these episodes in my family and many other cancer-stricken friends & relatives that I witnessed, I realized the importance of support groups & society. They are an integral part of the treatment and at times their services could be the crucial factor to make or break a patient’s recovery. Being a firm believer in education, it is the most efficient tool that can create awareness amongst the masses. To create and train these highly specialized personnel and to keep them going in-order for them to serve and educate the masses, they need to be funded adequately consistently. In support of National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) I have initiated a crowd funding drive where I’ll finally cut off my beard on 11th March 2022 that I grew for the past 2 years pledging for this cause. NCSM’s role is to educate, care & support the cancer patient and they run many prevention programmes.Growing & maintaining my beard the last 2 years was a challenging task and it didn’t fall short of comments, some good mostly discouraging, ridiculed, laughed at, few admired but most of the time a head turner, nothing of those hampered my spirit to carry on and fulfill the pledge for a worthy cause that I believe in strongly. Assisting me to cut my beard on 11th March 2022 is my colleague Julia, whose husband is currently going through post-surgery chemotherapy treatment and receiving lots of support from a non-profit organisation such as NCSM.No amount is too small when done with gratitude so let’s make this a very successful drive with overwhelming response. Please do share with others when you receive this plea befitting its term “crowdfunding”. See you all at Facebook Live on 11th March 2022 @ 3.30pm at the link below:https://bit.ly/BeardManShavesforCancer

We are students from DIPLOMA IN QUANTITY SURVEYING Y1S2G1, TARUC. In order to promote public awareness of the people who have been affected by cancer, we want to establish an online fundraising campaign to assist them. Despite the many obstacles we experienced throughout the preparation phase, we are certain that our efforts will be fruitful. Let's work together to make a difference for them. A little donation will not alter the world, but it will have an impact on someone's life. Although we come from various backgrounds, our objectives are the same. We hope to express the love and care to them within our ability. Thank you very much.

We are students from Group 1 studying Diploma in Multimedia Design in Tunku Abdul Rahman University College. We are organizing a fundraising event for cancer called “Another Tomorrow”. The name “Another Tomorrow” brings a positive mindset to those who are suffering from cancer as it reminds them that there is still hope. In conjunction to that, the purpose of this fundraising event is to raise awareness and money to support cancer patients. Our mission is to spread awareness so more people are aware of the severity of cancer. Our vision is to give people an understanding on why cancer patients need all the help they can get.

Back in 1998/99, I worked part time in the Oncology Department of Ipoh Specialist Centre in Ipoh Malaysia. The young me at that time has just completed my national exam and awaiting for my results. The short 3 months in that department helped me realise how agonising a journey can be for a cancer patient. They lose their hair not due to cancer but the treatment that they were undergoing. I have seen patients with bad water retention until water drips from their pores. I have seen patients with half a breast removed. I have seen patients vomit for days due to the side effects of chemotherapy. I have seen patients skin burnt due to radiotherapy treatments. I have seen crying patients and family members. I have seen expensive treatment fees for cancer patients. Above all, I see their pain, suffering, sadness, worries and fear. The concern on whether they can live another day, or have enough money to continue treatment, or who to take care of their love ones is real.We can help make a different! Although not entirely removing all woes but at least lessen the financial burden that these cancer patients have. Hence, me and my team is running this campaign to collect donations for the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) is a not-for-profit organization established in 1966 providing education, care and support services for people affected by cancer. Supporting their mission to ensure that no Malaysian fears cancer by creating an understanding of cancer that leads to prevention and early detection, and by providing the best possible care and support for those affected by cancer.

I have always been an advocate of raising awareness and funds to help those in needs, especially when people who are most dear to me were once in need. The painful memories of my loved ones' treatment are deeply etched into my brain. It was agonizing to see them suffer the pain during the entire journey. Apart from that, the stress and pressure that we, the family members had to face was beyond imaginable. To me, the journey was a toil, physically, mentally and emotionally for every single patient, their care givers and loved ones. Till present, the word Cancer still makes me cringe in fear. I am not alone in this. I am sure all of you know or heard of people close to you having this, some recovered, some don't. We all talk about how dreadful this can be but no one wants to be diagnosed with it. No one welcomes it. For those who have to face it, be it a patient or their loved ones, it feels lonely to begin with. As medical science evolves, this illness is not as scary because early detection can save lives. With the information and knowledge that we have now, we are able to take on this battle more confidently and with greater success. 7 years ago, I did my first Go Bald Campaign to help raise awareness on the importance of early detection and to raise funds. Today, I want to do this again and for the simplest reason; continue to raise awareness and funds for those who needs it. For all your donation and support, I pledge to go bald on 30th of Dec to signify a renewed life, a fresh beginning and an even better year for everyone in 2022. To all the cancer patients and survivors out there, I salute you for your courage, determination and perseverance to live life o the fullest! To all their loved one out there, I salute you for your patience, love and empathy!

Hi everyone. My name is Assuntamani Veerappan @ Assunta. I am taking the challenge to join the Standard Chartered Virtual Half Marathon (21km) and am planning to run at Cyberjaya lake by Sunday 28th November 2021. This will be my first half marathon race and I am dedicating this run to 2 very special people who have made me experience and enjoy life in many difference ways. Firstly, I am dedicating it to my late brother Ray Pasupathy Veerappan @ Ray who would have been 53 years old this coming December 2021. We lost him very early to soft tissue sarcoma cancer after an 8 year battle. Every Deepavali celebration and birthday function at home feels very different and quiet without him. The whole family feels a sense of emptiness because my brother Ray would have made his presence felt no matter where he is and will liven the party up when he walks in. He is one of the warmest, kindest and fun-loving persons that I have ever known. He always believed in living life to the fullest and helping others in any way. Secondly, I am dedicating this run to my best friend and a cancer survivor, Su Shan who has fought cancer with such a positive attitude and an amazing mental strength. Su Shan and I have been good friends since school days and we have known each other for the last 34 years. Su Shan has a very special place in my heart for encouraging me to explore new things and she is always full of positive energy. My culinary skills owe a great thank you to her. I have teamed up with National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) to raise funds with my participation in the half marathon run. NCSM plays an important role to raise public awareness on the prevention, screening and early detection of cancer through their education, care and support services. NCSM wishes to increase cancer services in Malaysia by providing affordable advanced screening and diagnostic facilities. NCSM moves to empower individuals affected with cancer to maintain the highest possible quality of life. Please support my cause by sponsoring my run. I know 21km is a long way and it takes me 3 hours of continuous running to complete this but I am going to keep going until I finish the race in honour of my brother Ray and Su Shan. Now that I am training for the 21km race, I am facing my own mental challenges although I am getting physically fitter by the day. I only started running in January 2021 with the pandemic lock-downs and exercise restrictions. Initially, I could barely run for 1km nonstop, but after going through vigorous training, I am very proud that I managed to complete 21km in my training today and I know I will make 21km on the race day. My personal goal is to run the whole 21km distance nonstop and finishing the race. Every kilometre completed at each training sessions, reminds me what a tough battle my late brother Ray and Su Shan would have gone through in my mind. Both of them make me have a greater appreciation for people and love around me.
