Fatin Amin

Hello everyone! The name is Fatin Amin. A lot of you may wonder what is Be Greater Than 15. My late brother Haikal, or more fondly known as Carl or Mo, was diagnosed with Advanced Metastatic Ewing Sarcoma in April 2017, at the age of 28. A rare form of pediatric cancer for kids, let alone for an adult. When he was first diagnosed, the doctors gave him only 15% chance of survival. The thought of losing him within that year left a huge pit in our stomachs. But we didn't let that bring our spirits down. We fought as hard as we could and we did get him into remission on New Years Day. Unfortunately, within three months, the cancer came back and we sadly lost him in May 2018.

Even with the horrible deck of cards he was dealt with, my brother didn't let that 15% run his life. He manifested the mindset that he was better and greater than 15%. We were blessed to have him receive his treatments at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in San Francisco, with an outstanding group of doctors, nurses, and caregivers. They gave him a fighting chance even when the odds were against him. Caring for him meant we had a lot of hurdles to get through. Our parents were all the way back in Malaysia, while I was in Temecula continuing my education. Evidently this reality coming to light made me his primary caregiver. Accommodations was our biggest hurdle as we needed a place to house our mum who came all the way to help me take care of him, while I was still going to school. Family House San Francisco is a not-for-profit organization that serves as a home away from home for many  patients and their families seeking medical treatment at UCSF. They provide free accommodation, amenities, and activities to help families cope and also bring happiness during the toughest of times.

When I signed up for Relay For Life Malaysia's 7K in December, I knew I could do something more. As crazy as many of my friends may think since I barely run a 100 yards, I decided to run 100k starting from this date till the actually day of the 7K. With this 100k run, I pledged to raise RM100,000 with plans of distributing the donations to a few charitable organizations. One of the organizations I helped was the Children's Home of Hope Malaysia- A not-for-profit that is similar to Family House San Francisco. A home away from home for kids and their families who are undergoing cancer treatments. Another was to help fund a young kid from Yayasan Chow Kit pursue his dream in culinary arts, and other organizations advocating for youth development in education, sports, and arts.

So for my 2nd Be Greater Than 15 initiative, I will be fundraising for Persatuan Sokongan Anak-Anak Kanser (PERSONA), an NGO based in Kuantan who are working to create medical access for pediatric cancer patients and their families who have no means of getting basic treatment. They need every kind of resource and logistics to get these kids proper treatment and a chance to actually be a kid. I will be doing 1000 specific exercise reps for the month of September, which so happens to also be Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and I hope you can help support or even just spread the good word! You can read more about this year's initiative in the fundraiser page.

My brother Carl has always been a giver and cared for the youth. He taught me the meaning of what it means to be an awesome human being. Kindness was one of the main keys he showed me and it has no limits. My brother kept saying people are going to see him in the history books as a figure of speech, and that is just what I am going to do. Keep his legacy alive, and spread the kindness he has shared with so many. If you have made it all the way to this part of the story, I thank you for making it this far. I hope you can support this initiative, whether it be by donating or spreading the good word! So without further ado, let's get this train going!
