Fundraising for Ain Husniza

Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, 17-year old Malaysian started the movement #MakeSchoolASaferPlace in April this year. She was uncomfortable and was creeped out by a lewd joke made by her PE teacher in class and made a TikTok video expressing her dismay. This video went viral after a day creating awareness that many other students have similar experience and have chosen to keep silent until Ain’s video gave them courage to tell their stories. Rape jokes are disrespectful.

 Ain's Challenges

Whilst many have given Ain supportive messages and members of the media giving her the platform to amplify her stories, this is just the beginning for Malaysians to #MakeSchoolASaferPlace.

Ain and her family are facing many challenges as they push forward the #MakeSchoolASaferPlace movement.

1.    Anxiety and Fear to Return to School

-       The said PE teacher is still teaching in the school and no actions have been taken by the Head of School nor Ministry of Education.

-       Ain have received rape threats from a student.

The student later apologised and Ain have forgiven him and will not press charges.

-       Due to these, Ain is afraid to attend school and have received a warning letter from the school that she may face expulsion.

2.   One-Sided Effort

-       Ain’s father have reached out to the PE teacher but the teacher refused a meeting.

-       In May, Ministry of Education only offered the solution to transfer the teacher to Selangor Education Department pending a related police investigation.

-       Ministry of Education have not addressed the issue of rape jokes being normalised.

3.    Battling Haters

-       Ain is continuously being intimidated, insulted and made to be a villain by her haters. This has caused mental health stress, not only to her but her parents and younger siblings.

Current State

Early August 2021:     Sungai Buloh police chief Superintendent Shafa’aton Abu Bakar reportedly said the deputy public prosecutor in charge of the teacher’s case has decided that it required no further action.

 August 4th, 2021:        Ain received a RM1million defamation suit from her PE teacher.

August 6th, 2021:        Ain Husniza was questioned for 30 minutes under Section 504 of the Malaysian penal code, which criminalises intentional insults in a manner that will cause the person “to  break the public peace, or to commit any other offence”. The offence is punishable by a jail term of up to two years, a fine or both.

Investigations NOT a Deterrent

“I was very nervous and scared, as much as any 17-year-old would feel, when I was called in by police. All I want is the feeling of safety in schools,” Ain said.

  “I don‘t mean to insult any parties, I don’t mean to defame or degrade certain teachers. I just want schools to be safe.

“It is our right as students to have safety in schools and it is what I’m fighting for right now,” she added.

This family is truly amazing.

For the last 2 years, Ain’s father Saiful Nizam is unable to get a full time job due to his medical condition. Ain and her mother have taken the responsibility to take care of the family.

Ain’s mother works as a cleaner. Ain will take care of her five younger siblings who are between the ages of 15 and 5 years old. Ain also sells popiah for extra income.

Fortunately, an international school is sponsoring Ain up to A-levels after learning of her near expulsion. En. Saiful Nizam is receiving help from a certified financial planner to make chart his family financial plan. Through this fundraising campaign, we aim to raise a total of RM50,000 . Our main priorities are the following::

1. Other Non-Legal Cost related to the case not covered by Pro Bono Lawyer.

2. Family Household Expenses for 6 months,

3. Mental Health Support Fund for family.  

4. Emergency Funds of 6 months 

Our fundraising campaign will be ongoing until 13th September 2021. We are infinitely grateful for your support! In the event that we do achieve our initial funding goal of RM50,000 before the end of our fundraising period - the additional funds will go towards other initiatives that aid Ain and her family.

5. Other Necessary Education Fund for Ain until SPM and her 3 siblings for 6 months.

6. Insurance Medical Cards for family for 1 year.
