Earlier this academic year, Ms. Erin Gillespie, our EPD ICT teacher, took a personal leave of absence and unknown to many of us, this was because her young son had contracted meningitus. While her son has recovered, he now suffers from permanent hearing loss.
This complication means that he will need long-term treatment, therapy and support. In Hong Kong, therapy is costly; both medical insurance and meager government assistance won't cover the proportionate treatment that Ms. Gillespie's son needs. English-language medium schools and education centers in Hong Kong that cater to children with Special Education Needs have insufficient spaces, and are also expensive.
While many of us cannot imagine the horror that just one illness can cause to a young child, we hope that the GSIS community might pull together and donate to help Ms. Gillespie with the costs of ongoing therapy and school expenses.
