Wendy Yeong, 36 years old
“I attended Special Class in the government school until Form 3. After school I attended a Job Training Centre, and was then referred to work in a few places. I was not happy at all because I did not have friends. I found my life has no meaning. I changed jobs many times. I joined United Voice in 2005 and started working there as a Project Supervisor. In 2007 my life was struck by the death of my father due to cancer. I was sad and lost then. My friends at United Voice supported me. I learned to be strong. Now, I am happier because I have the opportunity to learn many things, such as, to speak up for myself, to lead in a meeting, and to support my friends to do their work. I was very proud that I had the opportunity to be the organising chairperson for a national conference for persons with learning disabilities in 2014. I was also involved in many self-advocacy awareness workshop, sharing about my experiences to other persons with learning disabilities all over Malaysia. I hope to be a good and understanding leader among person with learning disabilities, to help them to self-advocate and have meaningful life. I also hope I can share my learning experience of what I have learned through the inclusive research project I have participated.”
We hope to be able to raise enough funds to cover costs for flights, accommodation, food, transportation and conference fee for May Yoong, Wendy and a supporting friend who will be supporting them during the congress. We believe this experience will give them a good chance to learn about self-advocacy practises from other countries, form new friendship with self-advocates from other countries, and represent Malaysia to make possible future partnership with self-advocacy groups from other countries.

United Voice (UV) is the first society in Malaysia that is led by persons with learning disabilities which was registered in July 2005. The members of UV include persons with Down Syndrome, Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Global Developmental Delay, Cerebral Palsy and other specific learning disabilities.
Since UV became a registered society, it has grown rapidly. We now have more than 200 members. More parents are beginning to realize the need to expose their children with learning disabilities to the self-advocacy movement activities so that they learn to be more independent and develop skills to voice up for themselves.
Our Mission:To advocate and to ensure that persons with learning disabilities are given the right to education, employment, community living and to be respected as individuals.
