Hi. My name is Tai Yee Ken. I've been playing Ultimate in Malaysia competitively for almost 9 years. I started back in high school and since then, I have founded my own Ultimate Frisbee club, made various friends domestically as well as a few abroad. Ultimate has, for the most part, influenced my life in a number of ways. I learned (and still am learning!) to be a better player, leader, and a person.
This year, Malaysia Flying Disc Association (MFDA) is sending a total of 3 teams, 1 in each division (Mixed, Men, Women) to the WFDF 2019 Asia Oceanic Ultimate & Guts Championships (AOUGC) which will be held in Shanghai from July 23rd till July 27th. I have been fortunate enough to be selected to represent Malaysia in the Men's division, and to be playing alongside a bunch of great, talented guys. Ask any aspiring athlete, and they would say that they wish they get to represent their beloved country on a world stage one day, playing the sport they love so much. Now, I've been given that chance and I am incredibly grateful and thankful for the opportunity.
However, Ultimate in Malaysia isn't an established sport yet. Hence, we're not getting sponsored by the government yet (hopefully we'll get there one day!). This means that all players are required to self-fund for this particular campaign. The estimated expenses for the whole campaign is close to MYR4,000. The total breakdown of expenses are as listed below:
- Tournament fees (MYR850)
- Flights (MYR1,300)
- Visa (MYR100)
- Logistics in Shanghai (MYR600)
- Team kit (MYR200)
- Food & Travel in Shanghai (MYR1,000)
