We are hoping to raise money on our birthdays for the Children's Kidney Fund, which is something very close to our hearts as our daughter is a nephrotic syndrome warrior. Please support us by donating! :)

My Story

To all our dear friends and family,

As some of you might know, our little Arielle was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome in May 2020. It's been 1.5 years of fighting this disease alongside her and it has been a humbling experience for our family.

Nephrotic syndrome is a condition that causes the kidneys to leak large amounts of protein into the urine. This can lead to a range of problems, including swelling of body tissues and a greater chance of catching infections. The symptoms of nephrotic syndrome can usually be controlled with steroid medication. Most children with nephrotic syndrome respond well to steroids and are not at risk of kidney failure. However, those who do not respond well to steroids usually do less well, they may eventually have kidney failure and need kidney transplants.

Arielle is, unfortunately, the latter, so she was diagnosed with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome. The photos in the gallery are snapshots of the battles our Arielle had to go through over the past 1.5 years. You can see her face swell up from the high dosages of steroids, her thinning hairline due to her high dosage of Tacrolimus medication, while these can be seen on the surface, there were many more side effects that came with these medications on her body. This was happening all while we were seeking other alternative solutions such as TCM and other holistic treatments. Since her condition was uncontrolled by multiple immunosuppressive drug treatments, we were left with the option of the application of Rituximab treatment (標靶藥). We were very fortunate enough to have Arielle reacting positively to it so far (fingers and toes crossed), and the medication helped keep her condition in a better-controlled situation. Although she's not in the clear yet, this treatment gave us much hope and we have heard that this treatment has done the same to patients with a similar situation as Arielle.

Since Rituximab is not yet listed in the Drug Formulary for Kidney patients' use, it is a very expensive drug that most patients will need to pay on their own. We were lucky to have ours covered by insurance. As we were going through this with Arielle, we couldn't help but wonder what happens to the underprivileged families with children suffering from kidney diseases without the money to support their treatments? We wondered if there is a charity in Hong Kong that supports families like us as well. This got us to research, and we were relieved to stumble across Children's Kidney Fund that addresses exactly this and supports these children suffering from Kidney related diseases. Not only that, Children's Kidney Fund also strives to help families with children suffering from Kidney related diseases both mentally and financially in Hong Kong.

With both of our birthdays are coming up, and in the spirit of giving, we humbly ask all of you to consider donating to this charity via our fundraising page here. We are hoping to raise a minimum of  HK$8,000 for the Children’s Kidney Fund as our joint effort to support this charity. This amount of money is sufficient for one dosage of Rituximab treatment for a young patient like Arielle. Your donation will truly mean so much to us and, of course, to Children’s Kidney Fund. Every single penny donated is very much appreciated, we believe that we can all make a difference together, so very little bit counts and we appreciate any donations big or small. :)

Thank you all for taking the time to read this! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Stay healthy, stay safe!

Love, Clarice and Pat

More about Children's Kidney Fund ( https://www.childrenkidneyfund.org.hk/en/about)
The Children's Kidney Fund ("CKF") is a registered non-profit making charitable organization [IR File No. 91/7162] in Hong Kong. The Children's Kidney Trust Fund were to support the families of children with kidney diseases and to help them ease their financial burden. Donations were collected from the general public, and from the overseas and local enterprises, rolling out our first subsidy scheme for the needy families in the purchase of tubing and accessories required for the automated peritoneal dialysis programme then newly introduced. They are committed to improving the physical and mental health of children with kidney diseases, helping them overcome difficulties and to live confidently.

Children could thus enjoy normal lives as their daytime activities were less disrupted. They offer subsidizations of transportation allowance for children travelling to and from hospitals taking haemodialysis and costs of anti-rejection drugs for children who had undergone kidney transplantation. They also offer a Rituximab Treatment Subsidy to provide comprehensive support to children kidney patients suffering from different degrees of sickness.
