About the Organiser

The Hong Kong Society for the Blind (HKSB) aims to provide services and opportunities to facilitate equal participation of people with visual impairment in Hong Kong. To enable our clients to develop their maximum potential and participate equally in all facets of life, HKSB embarks on the provision of quality services, the use of appropriate adaptive technologies and equipment to meet individual needs.

Our Vision and Goal

“Be Your Eyes” The sighted captain leads the Visually Impaired rider to travel by tandem
“By Your Side” Sighted and visually impaired ride on a tandem together to promote social inclusion

Visually impaired people often find it difficult, if not impossible, to ride a bicycle on their own. The event “Be Your Eyes, By Your Side. 2016 Pacific Foundation Tandem Charity Ride” provides them with the opportunity to ride a tandem as a rear rider (the “stoker”) with a sighted front rider (the “captain”). The sighted captain will narrate the scenery and activities to the stoker along the cycling route, which will extend the horizons of the visually impaired and enable them to experience and enjoy cycling.

Objectives of the Event

SOCIAL INCLUSION Sighted and visually impaired ride on a tandem together to promote social inclusion.

BROADENING THE HORIZONS OF VISUALLY IMPAIRED - Lead the visually impaired to discover attractions in Hong Kong by riding on a tandem and providing audio description.

SUSTAINABILITY - Raise funding to make the tandem event be sustainable, so as to benefit more visually impaired and further promote social inclusion.

Fundraising Targets

Public support is vital to the sustainability of the tandem project. We target to raise HK$500,000 to support the future development of tandem related activities, such as tandem eco tour, tandem cycling training course and public education activities. To encourage public engagement, there will be a “Highest Individual Fundraising Award”, a “Highest Individual Donation Award” and a “Highest Team Fundraising Award” presented to the participant who has raised or donated the highest amount of sponsorship in each category.

By fundraising online through SimplyGiving.com and reaching out to your network of friends to donate, you can support HKSB’s mission in empowering and helping the visually impaired community in Hong Kong.

Be a change-maker in bringing light and hope to many more lives today!
