About Event

Project Training Of Trainers in Nepal

….teach young children to protect themselves from sexual abuse

….teach teenagers how to prevent HIV/AIDS

Soroptimist International Club of Bangsar (SICB) was chartered on 23rd October 1992. SICB is part of an international organisation – Soroptimist International which is a global voice for women working through awareness, advocacy and action in over 132 countries and has 3,100 clubs worldwide with over 80,000 members.

HOW IT STARTED

In October 2015, 3 members from SICB went on a Nepal Earthquake Disaster Relief trip to Sudal Village, Nepal.  During the visit, copy of the SICB AIDS Education for Teenagers training manual was given to two local organizations. The manual was greatly appreciated as they saw a great need to create awareness on HIV/AIDS to their vulnerable teenagers.  They broached to SICB their keenness to get training to run the program.  They have participants ready to be trained to run workshops for teenagers and children from schools/ orphanages, and street children from their respective community.

OUR PARTNERS IN NEPAL

1.    Soroptimist Club of Kathmandu

2.    Father’s House Nepal

Noticing the passion of our Nepal partners, SICB wants to make their dream into a reality - sharing knowledge of HIV/AIDS with their teenagers.  We know that HIV/AIDS is a totally preventable disease but the burden of the disease both to an individual, family and community is immense.

We have to head to Nepal to nurse their passion, a passion that has been with SICB over the last 20 years.

Now on FUNDING!

Instead of waiting for our Nepal partners, hard pressed after the earthquake of 2015, to raise money to sponsor trainers from Malaysia to Nepal, we at SICB decided to initiate an online fund raising campaign to make the TOT possible.

GOAL OF TOT

The TOT Programs aim to impart background knowledge, skills and practical experience to facilitate the workshops in the local communities.

WHO ARE THE TRAINERS/TRAINEES

Trainers are members of SICB who have been passionately involved in the programs, with training experience at past TOT.

Trainees are members of SI Kathmandu, leaders in other local organizations, teachers and individuals who have been screened by our local partners.

OUR PROGRAMS

Instead of training for only one program, we decided to do two:

1.     AIDS EDUCATION FOR TEENAGERS PROGRAM – launched by SICB in 1994, is a prevention program for teenagers.  In the workshop, we provide accurate information about HIV/AIDS and guidance on care and support to those living with HIV/AIDS.  The program, using an interactive approach, includes activities/games to promote healthier and safer life choices (e.g. delayed sex, say no to unwanted sex or to drugs etc).

This meaningful program has been awarded Soroptimist International South West Pacific Awards in 1998 and 2003.  We also shared the project with other SI Clubs and NGOs both locally and internationally to reach out to more teenagers worldwide.

2.    PERSONAL SAFETY FOR CHILDREN WORKSHOP – another of our award winning project was started in late 2006. This Child Sexual Abuse prevention project is designed in an interactive and fun mode to empower young children with knowledge on how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse and exploitation. Children learn about their rights over their own body.  We equip them with skills to recognize good touches and bad touches.

From such hand-on workshops, we then developed the Training Manual so that the message could reach more children through a bigger network of trained facilitators. For that we were bestowed a Best Practice Award during the Soroptimist International South West Pacific Conference in 2007 in Queensland, Australia.

HOW MUCH

We target to raise RM15,000.  The money will send 4 trainers to conduct  training for the above 2 SICB programs in Nepal.

The funds will cover air tickets, ground arrangements, training materials and costs of holding the trainings in Nepal.

After the training, any excess fund will be (at SICB’s discretion):

1)  donated to our partners to carry out sustainable work in Nepal including translation of the materials to their local language.

and

2)  channeled to the SICB AIDS Education Project Fund for future projects in Malaysia or other needy countries.

As members of SICB, we are proud and privileged to be able to share what we have achieved with the less fortunate.

We now seek your donation to do that in Nepal.

With the support of  SimplyGiving.com,  you can make safe and secure donations to help this dream come true.  It also allows you to follow the progress of the Project TOT Nepal as we embark on this mission.

Thank you!
