Currently, Ren Ci @ Bukit Batok St. 52 has shelves that can accommodate about 500 books of various sizes. We hope to build what we believed will be the first dedicated shelf of Old Master Q comics (which was a frequently requested title from our nursing home residents).
We reckon the initial cost of stocking up the library will be around $10,000 (500 x $20/copy).
Ren Ci @ Bukit Batok St. 52 had a year-long collaboration with National Library Board (NLB) where NLB would forward us a batch of senior-friendly books on a quarterly basis. During this period, we discovered that a number of our nursing home residents do cherish this reading initiative. We also received feedback, via the volunteers who helped with this library/reading initiative, about the types of books that are more popular with our residents. We decided thereafter that it would be more beneficial to build our own library of books with titles that our residents would enjoy.
Ren Ci Hospital operates a spectrum of services that cater to the underprivileged as well as seniors. Ren Ci @ Bukit Batok St. 52 houses a 257-bed Nursing Home and a Senior Care Centre that offers day care services for the seniors. This facility started operations in 2015 and is currently running at full capacity. As Ren Ci @ Bukit Batok St. 52 is situated within the community, we do hope that the library can also benefit everyone else in the community. However, this will require additional resources and we hope to work towards this goal of sharing the resources eventually.
