My Story
My first direct encounter with Afghans refugees began………a year ago when I volunteered my services to an Afghan Learning Centre. I didn’t anticipate the effect they would have on me. The decision to flee, their traumatic flight, their trials, and tribulations shocked me to the core. I knew I wanted to do more – to create greater awareness of their presence, their concerns, their search for a better, more meaningful life. And then I met Emily, a young, passionate volunteer drama-teacher.
To tell their story, Emily had written a play....Dreams! Her goal was to empower these Afghan children and their mothers
Her dedication and love for these refugees and the desire to help them realize some of their dreams led to the production of this theatre play.
This was the answer to my prayers. A theatre enthusiast myself, and working on this heartbreaking production has given me a greater insight into the trauma and the horror of having to flee one’s country.
This may not be the penultimate of the solution of their problem but it will make a difference. I know there are like-minded people out among you who want to help. You may not be able to devote time but your contribution, big or small, show you care for those less fortunate.
