Joy Workshop (Persatuan Kebajikan Insan Istimewa Melaka) is a non-profit centre opened in 1999 in Melaka to cater to young adults with learning disabilities (Slow-learners, Down’s Syndrome, Autistic and other mental impairments) ages 15 and above. The clients work at contract jobs and receive a wage besides being trained in self help skills, social and communication skills, housekeeping, recycling, computer, functional academics and community functioning skills. Their work is supervised by trainers and some volunteers. Joy Workshop fills the gap in the above services as their families provide very little or limited opportunities for those with learning disabilities.
We help ensure continued support and development for this much-marginalised community in the hope that they will be mainstreamed into society and eventually are self-supporting and manage to live with relative independence. Most of our clients’ families come from the lower income level and only manage to contribute minimally towards the Joy Workshop services, so Joy Workshop depends on other means including public donations to support our efforts.
We also run small projects (Jumble Shop, Recycling Unit) as the focus is on introducing our clients to work routines and create a more activity based environment.
Other objectives of this workshop include:
- To train and equip young adults in daily living skills and participate in societal activities.
- To expose them to pre-vocational and work training to prepare them for open employment.
- To promote awareness of the needs of the young adults in coping with life.
- To prepare these adults for integration into the community and lead a healthy lifestyle.
- To encourage parent and family involvement in the training and education of the young adult.
- To provide a sheltered workshop for those incapable of open employment.
The Workshop is registered with the Welfare Department, Registrar of Societies and the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN). We are seeking government and corporate support to donate to our cause to help us sustain our continuity in serving people who are in need of our services.
