  • Singapore    Cancer
Raised So Far SGD 375

Adam Betteridge

Marj is our son's nanny and has been an integral part of the family for the past 4 years.  Sadly in June 2020, Marj was diagnosed with stage-2 breast cancer.  Marj holds the mandatory health insurance, and this is will cover the surgery (completed successfully in July) and chemotherapy (underway), however it is capped at maximum of 15k SGD and/ or 3-months post-op. The cancer is judged aggressive, and Marj's doctors have prescribed chemotherapy, followed by radiation treatment and hormone treatment.   The insurance does not cover the remaining 10-15k SGD.  We care deeply for Marj's health and have contributed 2k SGD ourselves to her medical expenses.  We're seeking donations to give Marj the full course of treatment and the best chance of beating the cancer long term.

Marj is a 35-year-old single mother of 2 children and has been a domestic helper for 9 years in Singapore.  She came to Singapore, when her son and daughter were 3-years and 2-months old, because they received no financial support from their father  Marj is the major bread-winner of our extended family.  With her remittances, Marj provides for her children, her aging mother, and several of her brothers and sisters.  The situation is made worse by COVID. Marj's Philippine family run a food stall and have seen sales fall by 70% (even without lock-down).  If lock-down is imposed, then they will have no support other than Marj's remittances.

Marj wrote "knowing I have cancer I can't tell my mum about my situation, she is old and worrying alot makes her condition worst.  It was a shock to my siblings, knowing that I am going through a very difficult time and the potential loss of essential economic support.  It is the source of unimaginable worries"
