The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM)

Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder is little understood and often misunderstood. It is a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain. Persons with autism (PWAs) typically have challenges with verbal and non-verbal communication, social interaction, behaviour and daily activities. There are great variations in characteristics among PWAs. Many require continuous support even to manage simple daily tasks that others take for granted. Autism lasts a lifetime, the cause is still being debated and there is no known cure.

The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) is a non-profit, tax-exempt, non-governmental organisation conceived in 1986 by a group of parents and professionals. Registered on 3 March 1987, NASOM is a national voluntary organisation with a mission to promote autism awareness, provide treatment, education, care and protection for PWAs, and support for their families. NASOM currently operates 15 intervention centres nationwide and a one-stop assessment, therapy, intensive intervention and creative arts centre in Setia Alam.

Lifetime cost of autism intervention and care is high and rising, and is beyond the means of low income families. This is due to the high ratio of teacher/caregiver to the number of students/children with autism, and specialised nature of the services. Children with severe conditions may even require a 1-to-1 dedicated support. NASOM offers comprehensive autism treatment, care and support services at affordable rates, which are way below our actual costs, so that our services are accessible to the growing number of PWAs in Malaysia. We can only achieve this with generous and continuing support from all parties. Without your donation and support, many PWAs and their families may not have the chance to improve their quality of life.

We are doing what other service providers are not able to do. Please help us make a difference in the lives of PWAs, especially children, and their families. Donations to NASOM are tax-exempt under Section 44(6) of the Income Tax Act 1967.
