Hello everyone!

I am Mayee Cruz, an authorized fundraiser of Greenpeace Philippines. It's been eight years since I started working for non-profits and to date, Greenpeace is the cause that I want to support for the rest of my life.

I can still remember the moment I volunteered in one of Greenpeace’s actions demanding Climate Justice. It was 5 am when I started to sit on the road in front of a fossil fuel giant with my co-volunteers. The mission: to peacefully protest for 10 hours and make them understand what we are fighting for. After 2 hours, I can already feel the pain in my back and then I asked myself the questions "Why am I here?" and "What's my main reason in joining this movement?"

It came into my realization that I am motivated to do something for the environment. There is more to life than looking at the vast waters, I want my future children to see the beauty of our Philippine seas. I remember the time when Typhoon Yolanda hit our country, I wouldn’t want that to happen again. If we all work together for the good of our environment, we will much likely experience less catastrophe. The little things we do for the sake of our waters will be effective in the long run if we do it consistently and encourage others to do the same.

After all, we are looking at the same horizon, how different could our perspectives be?

According to the 2019 Global Peace Index, the Philippines ranks highest among the most threatened countries affected by the dangers caused by climate change. Our country is at risk because 47% of our population are areas that are greatly exposed to threats including earthquakes, tsunami, floods, tropical cyclones, and drought.

We are now facing Climate Emergency!

Given the existing laws on environmental issues, stronger implementation, regulation, the punishment of illegal doers are needed. Investment in innovation and research and funding of extensive protective measures are necessary to provide a firm foundation towards the achievement of our common goal. As individuals, we can actually start by practicing sustainability at home by taking simple measures like carrying your own tumbler for drinks, refusing single-use straws, bringing an eco-bag when shopping, or using sunscreens without Oxybenzone. The important thing is we need to refuse to be apathetic towards issues about the environment.

A simple act you can commit is to donate to our cause. Greenpeace is the only global environmental charity that doesn't accept corporate or government donations so we can maintain an independent voice. This means we rely on individual supporters like you to fund our work.
