I'm making a difference by raising money for a cause close to my heart. The LGBTQIA+ community in Malaysia is so extremely marginalised, a little bit of our funds can go a long way to help.
My Story
We were established in 2014 and is the first and only trans-led community-based organization in Malaysia, offering a drop-in centre: the only safe space for transgender persons in Kuala Lumpur, and has served more than 2,000 transgender people over the years. SEED conducts community-based empowerment programs. Activities include hosting information sessions for universities, corporations, and government agencies at the drop-in center, issuing referrals to clients who are seeking medical or legal assistance, and peer-to-peer counseling.
In August 2017, SEED opened a 'Home for elderly transgender people', as we found that they face difficulties if they want to make use of general shelter facilities, because most shelters require their clients to have their appearance resemble the gender stated on their ID-card. This means that transgender women can not be themselves, and would have to cut their hair short and dress like a man to be able to live in the shelter. This home is aimed for transgender members above 45 years of age, regardless of their ethnicity and religion, to start fresh - look for a job and sustain themselves.
SEED Malaysia current financial situation is completely dependent upon crowdfunding to continue to do our best to improve the quality of life for the transgender people that we work with.
