Fund cancer research that saves lives is fundraising for Cancer Research Malaysia

I created this fundraiser in honor of my dad, who was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer - stage 4 and currently undergoing chemotherapy as the only option for survival. This fundraiser is not made to fund my dad's treatments, but made in support of Cancer Research Malaysia as the only non-profit organisation in the country dedicated to the research of cancers that commonly affect Malaysians. With your kind donations, I hope to: 1. Ensure cancer research in my home country is well supported. 2. Bring awareness to the silent death of pancreatic cancer (symptoms don't usually occur till the advanced stages) and to get regular tests. 3. Empower others to have proper screening and treatment options in the near future. My Story

2019 is a challenging year for my family as dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer - stage 4. When they say "stage 4", you know it's literally not a good sign. Dad's cancer has spread to the liver, of which the only treatment method available and advised is chemotherapy.

A little truth about pancreatic cancer. 
  • About 95% of people with pancreatic cancer die from it.
  • It's said to be one of the more lethal forms of cancer as there are usually no symptoms during the early stages and mostly discovered when it has reached advanced levels (in the case of my dad). 
  •  Presently, there are no general screening tools for this form of cancer. 
Three months after his initial diagnosis, dad's cancer marker has reduced an astounding 83% (22,000 - 3000) with slight fluctuations throughout the treatment cycles.

Why Donate?

Here's the thing. This fundraiser was NOT built to raise funds for my dad's treatments, but to fund ongoing research in preventing, detecting, diagnosing, and curing cancer so others can have a better chance of survival. More than 100 Malaysians are diagnosed with cancer every day so each dollar counts in developing better screening approaches and cures.

Why Cancer Research Malaysia?

Cancer Research Malaysia is the only non-profit organisation in the country dedicated to the research of cancers that commonly affect Malaysians, as well as others in the region. For the past 18 years since its establishment, their efforts include:
  • Improving the survival rates of Asian cancer patients, focusing on neglected areas of research.
  • Empowering Asians to have the proper screening and treatment.
  • Improving survival rates by being more accessible, focusing on providing existing cures to patients rather than sit on inaction and potentially losing lives.
  • Making affordable and timely treatments by re-purposing drugs, acknowledging the reality that developing new cures are costly and risky.
  • Putting Malaysia in the global spotlight for cancer research by collaborating with top scientists around the world, and working to nurture the next generation of Malaysian cancer researchers.
Personally, I chose this organisation as they have proven credibility and validity of their efforts, and are currently in dire need of funds. Also, being ultimately Malaysian, I want to ensure that I can provide ample support and empower cancer research in my home country with what little I can.
