Since the start of this year, over 320,000 people have crossed the Mediterranean, undertaking treacherous journeys from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, and other countries torn apart by war, persecution, and a horrifying list of human miseries.
Thousands of families are fleeing for their lives, risking the treacherous sea and land crossings. Many having no choice but to board over-crowded, flimsy boats to give their children a chance of survival and safety. For some, this desperate journey will be their last. Almost 3,000 people have drowned trying to reach safety in Europe. The crossing is dangerous but for many families, who have lived through years of trauma and face ongoing conflict, fleeing their homes and making this journey is the only choice they feel they have.
UNHCR is on the ground, protecting refugees and providing lifesaving assistance such as shelter, food, water and medical care to refugees arriving in Europe. We are also providing assistance and protection in countries where refugees transit along their journey to Europe.
