Project Teringai-Tumunda is a two-week education project taking place this July in rural areas of Kota Marudu, Sabah, Malaysia. Specifically, two schools: SK Temuno Teringai Darat & SK Tumunda Salimandut. This project aims to reduce the urban-rural education gap that exists in Malaysia.
Volunteers will be spending these two weeks teaching underprivileged students English & Mathematics. Therefore, I'm raising RM3,500 to provide stationeries kits (pencil case, pencils, ruler, eraser, folder and exercise books) to 653 students in both school. The beneficiaries of this project will be underprivileged Year 6 students (12-year-olds) who are in their final year of primary school.
Most of these students come from low-income families, which means they often don’t have sufficient access to the resources they need to excel in school. As part of the organising committee, I am aware of their situation. Many of the students are lacking in terms of basic stationery like pencils or erasers. As you can imagine, this makes learning difficult.
Class sizes in Malaysia also tend to be big (think over 30-40+ students), so struggling students often get left behind. While students studying in urban parts of Malaysia may have additional resources to help them cope with their studies – after-school tutoring lessons, reference books, etc – this isn’t an option for our beneficiaries due to their financial background & location. It’s our hope that this project will help fill this need.
