An 8-year old child would typically be in school developing more complex language skills, improving on their physical coordination as well as making great gains in their cognitive development. Dharshini d/o Manimaran is 8-years old but none of these are her milestones.
Dharshini and two of her sisters were born under Section 13 of the Birth Registration Act and because of that, they do not have access to formal education. Her mother is an illiterate factory worker and her birth father passed away when she was only 1-years old. Things got worse when she was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in 2017.
SMA is a rare genetic condition most people have never heard of. It causes progressive muscle weakness and loss of movement due to muscle wasting. The devastating part of this condition is that there is still no cure. There is medication available to help improve Dharshini's quality of life but with limited household income, Dharshini can only hope for a miracle.
Dharshini and her family have gone through a lot and they are appealing to modern day heroes to give Dharshini that miracle and help them through this. Please donate whatever you can because whatever you give will mean a lot to them.
