I'm making a difference by raising money for a cause close to my heart. Please support me to raise funds in-conjunction with the hike.
My Story
- In Malaysia, mental health issues are reaching critical levels, with an estimated 1 in 3 Malaysians facing mental health challenges. Depression alone affects over a million people, and mental health struggles are especially prevalent in young people, with 1 in 6 Malaysian children grappling with issues that are often unseen, undiagnosed, and untreated.
- For too long, mental health has been a taboo subject, rarely spoken about openly. Factors such as parenting styles, trauma, loneliness, racism, academic and career pressure, financial struggles, and abuse all contribute to the rise in mental health challenges.
- This growing crisis is something we must address, and neither my family or I are spared from this challenge. As such, I’m hiking to raise awareness and support for those affected.
- Mental health is a deeply personal cause for me. I have faced my own battles, navigating some of the darkest moments in silence. Depression has been a persistent presence, one that brings highs and lows but always seems to return. During those times, I often felt isolated, unsure who I could reach out to without fear of judgment or dismissal. I realized that battling depression is nearly impossible alone; we need people who understand, who can help without judgment.
- As a father, I am all too aware of the mental health pressures that affect the younger generation. Many young people carry the weight of educational expectations, the pressure to perform, and a fear of failure that can become overwhelming. I have seen the strain in my own children, as they navigate the demands of school and extracurriculars, often sacrificing sleep and peace of mind. Their struggles remind me of my own, and I want to contribute to a future where more young people can access the support they need.
- On November 5th, over a 4 day and 3 nights hike; I will be taking on a challenging 35 - 40km hike through Mexico's Copper Canyon, a place known to be four times larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. Over four days, I will tackle steep elevation changes— 1,000 meters down and up tp 1,300 meters up—through rocky trails and wilderness terrain. This is not an easy path, even for a seasoned hiker like myself, and will require careful navigation and persistence.
- To support mental health initiatives, I am setting a fundraising goal of RM 6,000 but those who know me we will know that I am aiming for RM 15,000.00. Every ringgit raised will go towards mental health resources and support systems that provide vital assistance to those struggling with depression and other mental health conditions.
- I’m grateful to work with the Edrington Group, a company that prioritizes alleviating poverty and trauma for people and the environment. Through their "Triple Matching Initiative," every contribution to my campaign will be tripled, amplifying the impact of every donation.
- Your support can make a meaningful difference. By contributing, you’re helping to fund essential services, outreach programs, and resources that offer hope and healing to those who may be struggling in silence.
- Thank you for joining me in this journey. Together, we can help bring mental health into the open, where it belongs.
- Befrienders is a not-for-profit organisation providing emotional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to people who are lonely, in distress, in despair, and having suicidal thoughts - without charge
